The Borough of South Plainfield held an Observance at Monument Park on Sunday September 11, 2011 to honor the memory of the Victims of 9/11. Members of South Plainfield’s EMS were proud to be a part of this fitting tribute to commemorate the ten year anniversary of that tragic day. EMS Chief Laferrera was among the patricians privileged to light one of the memorial candles. The EMS community was touched by the 9/11 terror attack with the loss of 42 colleagues. We reflect on their sacrifice and the sacrifice of all the innocent Victims who lost their lives on that fateful day.

South Plainfield EMS participates in the Borough’s Annual Labor Day Parade. Wind and flood damage from Hurricane Irene was clean-up in time and the forecasted rain held off until after the parade. But, unfortunately the Fireworks display for that night had to be canceled. While marching in the parade, Squad EMTs tended to the medical needs of two spectators. South Plainfield EMS also provided stand-by emergency medical service at the Middle School Picnic held after the parade. Two Ambulance Crews were on hand to cover the Park during the Fireworks, but, were not needed.  We at the Volunteer EMS Squad are very grateful for all the praise and support showed by the people along route. Thank you all so much.

Irene flood Water 2011

Despite having flood water surrounding our building up to the foundation and losing electrical power, EMS service for the community was never interrupted. Ambulances where moved to Fire Headquarters for the duration of the storm and operations continued from there. Our members who had already put in many extra hours to cover the Barclays Tournament and Hurricane, still managed to get the building cleaned up in time for Labor Day. The Squad would like to thank all the members who came in and put in the extra effort to return our building back to normal. We like to thank our landscaper for making our grounds look like the storm never happen. We would also like to say a very special thank you to our Brother Volunteers at the Fire Department for their gracious hospitality during the storm.

South Plainfield EMS Attends Port Security Outerbridge Crossing Drill
Sunday, October 3, 2010
-
On Sunday, October 3rd, responders from throughout Middlesex County converged on the Outerbridge Crossing for a simulated major mass casualty event. The focus of the exercise was to test and validate procedures developed in this plan pertaining to medical operations of the Port Security NJ EMS Plan, Outerbridge Crossing Appendix. In addition to EMS, law enforcement, fire, and emergency management officials tested their internal standard operating procedures as well, in particular to incident management, interoperable communications, rescue, and other items. The exercise simulated a tractor trailer making an accidental impact with a gasoline tanker, causing a motor vehicle accident. The trailer jackknifes and traps several people in numerous passenger cars. While this took place, the gasoline tanker fuel valves ruptured and spread fuel onto the roadway and into the draining leading under the bridge. An explosion takes places, and the responders are notified. The Port Authority of NY/NJ designed the exercise. Participating response agencies were: Raritan Bay EMS, Middlesex County EMS agencies, the New Jersey EMS Task Force, Middlesex County OEM, Perth Amboy Fire and Police, Carteret Fire, Port Authority of NY/NJ, Middlesex County Hazmat, NJ State Police, NJ Department of Transportation, and Kinder Morgan. Official s from the New York City Fire Department were also present as observers. South Plainfield EMS Ambulance 467 assumed the role as the "Code Real" Ambulance, where in which the crew was responsible to provide medical care in the event of a real emergency during the drill.
